International Conference Honors
Suresh P. Sethi
Over 150 attendees from around the world gathered for the three-day
International Conference on Management Sciences in honor of Professor
Suresh P. Sethi (http://som.utdallas.edu/sethi/) at the UTD School of
Management May 20-22, 2006. Friends, colleagues, classmates, students,
and postdoctoral fellows of Suresh Sethi organized the conference to
recognize his profound influence on the fields of operations management,
operations research, marketing, finance and optimal control.
Suresh Sethi is Ashbel Smith Professor of Operations Management and Director of
the UTD’s Center for Intelligent Supply Networks.
The conference began May 20 with a Texas style BBQ and live music. On May 21, Nobel Laureate Harry M. Markowitz delivered the keynote address, “A Detailed, Asynchronous Stock Market Simulator” (see attached left). Sixty papers in four parallel sessions were presented. That evening, Professor Bala Balachandran of Kellogg at Northwestern University acted as master of ceremonies for the roast and dinner. Professor Qing Zhang of University of Georgia presented a book –Stochastic Processes, Optimization, and Control Theory– edited in Sethi’s honor.
A silk brocade ceremonial robe of the type, according to Indian tradition, bestowed upon people who are receiving special honors was presented by UTD Provost Hobson Wildenthal, Bala Balachandran, Dean Hasan Pirkul, Frank Bass, and Sethi's Ph.D. advisor Gerry Thompson. The day ended well past midnight with a classical Indian music concert by Shankar Bhattacharyya. On May 22, Gerry Thompson delivered the conference’s closing plenary session.
