MBA Degree Plan, Healthcare Management Focus Area
Healthcare is the U.S.’s second largest employer and the largest employer in North Texas. The concentration in Healthcare Management prepares students for management careers in this dynamic and rapidly growing industry, including hospitals and health systems, insurers and managed care organizations, physician group practices, pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, government agencies and healthcare consulting organizations.
Healthcare Management differs from other concentrations by blending specific coursework and professional development opportunities. An interdisciplinary faculty based in the School of Management, together with a select group of experienced industry executives, will help prepare students to respond to the many critical issues facing the healthcare industry.

HMGT 6320 The American Healthcare System
This course provides an advanced overview of the US healthcare system. It outlines the major players along the healthcare value chain and analyzes the key strategic, operational and financial issues facing the industry. The objectives are to describe the structure of the health services sector, identify the major challenges facing the industry and understand how the many industry stakeholders interrelate.
HMGT 6321 Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations
Healthcare is highly regulated, politicized and reimbursement driven. This course focuses on what healthcare organizations must do to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Topics include external and internal environment analysis, strategy formulation, organization design, performance measurement and control systems, and the impact of mergers and alliances. Prerequisite: HMGT 6320.
HMGT 6322 Healthcare Cost Management and Control
Cost control has assumed increasing managerial significance in healthcare. This course will introduce students to the fundamental principles of cost management in a healthcare setting. Topics include healthcare cost terminology and behavior, activity based costing and activity based management. Also covered will be fixed vs. flexible budgeting, responsibility accounting, and contemporary approaches to performance measurement and evaluation. Prerequisite: HMGT 6320 and either AIM 6201 or AIM 6202.
HMGT 6323 Healthcare Informatics
This course provides students with an overview of healthcare information management, including the analysis, design, selection and utilization of information systems in complex healthcare settings. Topics include information security, clinical information and decision support systems, healthcare database management, internet and E-health applications, and the economic evaluation of healthcare information systems. Prerequisite: HMGT 6320 and MIS 6204 or equivalent.
HMGT 6324 Healthcare Negotiation and Dispute Resolution
Negotiation is the art and science of reaching agreements between interdependent parties who seek to maximize their respective outcomes. This course focuses on theories, techniques, and styles of negotiation and dispute resolution with particular reference to the healthcare industry. The course is intended for those who work in the field, those who are consumers of health services and those who are interested in general aspects of negotiation and dispute resolution.
HMGT 6329 Special Topics in Healthcare Management
This course will examine several important structural, political and regulatory issues in healthcare that don’t fall neatly under a functional area of management. Each of these topics are of vital interest to healthcare managers, and an understanding of their economic, financial and political ramifications is essential to those pursuing a career in the healthcare field. The class will be facilitated by School of Management faculty in conjunction with senior outside healthcare administrators and physician executives. Prerequisite: HMGT 6320.
